Offers Penguin Books
Penguin Books is one of the largest publishers in the world with a long history and has led so many people on the path of imagination, emotions, knowledge and adventure.
Allen Lane who was the director of the Bodley Head publishing house and looking for new ideas that would keep the company at a good level due to the great Depression, coming back from a trip it occurred to him that they could make small books with desirable and quality titles to sell in totally different places such as train stations. The publisher did not like this idea so he decided to create his own publishing house with his own money under the name Penguin.
He obtained the reprint rights of some titles of interest and began to look for places where he could sell his merchandise. The form of distribution for his books was not going to be the traditional one since he did not go to any bookstore as it would have been conventional. Their style of sale was more similar to that of magazines since people could buy them in stores with a variety of products, food or "in passing".
The prices of the books were so, so tight, that Allen had to sell at least seventeen thousand copies to cover expenses. He chose such prestigious titles as The Mysterious Affair of Styles, by Agatha Christie or Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway so that the interest of society would be extreme and he would not have losses with his first publications.
In just one year, the Penguin publishing house had already sold more than three million books, bringing many people closer to the world of reading that they could not afford before.
The success of this editorial spread throughout the world and in the United States with the publisher Simon and Schuster began producing books with the same characteristics giving the name pocket book (paperback). They became very desired and consumed especially by the military of the time since they were very useful in their missions at the time of breaks to have something that entertained them and due to their structure and size, they were easy to transport and handle.
Over the years, many publishers around the world copied this book format. Germany, Italy, France, Spain… but in Great Britain, the pocket book was already so widespread that almost half of the publishing world consisted of this new format.
Thanks to this new era of books, many people discovered the exciting world of reading, stories, adventures, curiosities. Reading makes us be in a continuous learning , be it cultural or emotional and that is something very important in our life and more in these days when we are bombarded with fakenews and we have to create a critical and informed brain to avoid confusion.
