Hugo Boss is an international company that operates in the textile sector and in the perfume sector for both men and women. It is a high quality brand and considered luxury due to its high prices. At present it sells its products all over the world, especially in countries such as Germany, France, the United States and the United Kingdom. It is a brand of great importance for the sector and for the economy of many families since it has about 10,000 workers among all its factories, stores and offices.
But not everything was so beautiful for the company since in its history we find a dark past that the brand would love to leave behind and if they could, eliminate the damage caused. What are we talking about? Keep reading and we will tell you one of the most devastating episodes for the world of fashion.
It all began in 1923 when, after working for a year in a workshop as a dressmaker, Hugo Ferdinand Boss decided to embark on the adventure of being his own boss and setting up a textile company with 22 workers in Metzingen, Germany. The clothes that Boss manufactured were not intended for casual and modern use, but instead opted more for uniformed and useful garments for work such as suits for the industry, raincoats, sportswear, police uniforms ...
Until then everything is great. But the tense years arrived in Germany where World War II was brewing and Hugo Boss joins the German Nationalist Workers' Party that is more commonly known as the Nazi Party. What does this mean? This fact means that the company stops producing the articles with which it sold and focuses on creating military uniforms for its party supplying the SA, SS, Hitler Youth and Wehrmacht, its clientele being more than three million people, so they converted to Boss and his company in a company with a lot of potential and good economic stability, thus getting him out of the bankruptcy suffered by the Great Depression. Economically speaking it was a success because the military not only needed a uniform, but depending on which act or mission, they needed different uniforms, so each member of the army needed between five and eight different uniforms.
Apart from making things easier for the Nazi Party from its union with the Nazi Party until the end of World War II, in his factory he also took advantage of this situation to use about 180 workers under inhumane conditions, with an excessive workload and little food and health. Most of those people were Jewish women from France and Poland.
But his "hot streak" ended when the Second World War ended as the New Government accused him of collaborating with Nazism. His company was an important part of the Nazi regime, which meant that Hugo Ferdinand Boss lost his right to vote and also had to pay a fine. He tried to clear his name by presenting an appeal to the court of law, but the Government did not forgive his actions and Hugo Boss died in 1948 as a famous but not loved person.
His descendants made the decision to leave that entire trajectory behind and radically change the business model, going from manufacturing workwear and military uniforms to focusing on a younger and more successful profile in the business world. Step after step, the company managed to get rid of the bad times of the company (although not completely) and in the 70s, the growth of the company was important and people began to have a brand image totally different from its beginnings already that high quality and elegant advertising made Hugo Boss a high standing brand.
